Features

1. What kind of obstacles can biped detect?

expand faq

biped can detect all sorts of obstacles in front of you: branches, traffic signs, holes, staircases going down, drop-offs... day and night.

But it goes beyond that. biped can also detect moving obstacles, such as vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles...) or pedestrians (walking, running, riding a bicycle..).

2. Can biped detect holes?

expand faq

biped can detect holes and drop-offs of 30 cm and above. Users are warned with the same sound as for an obstacle, but with a lower pitch, to make it feel like the sound in coming from the floor. We advise users to navigate with a white cane, in order to identify the smaller changes of level and of texture.

3. How wide and how far does biped see?

expand faq

biped can capture close to 170 degrees of field of view around the user, nearly as much as human eyes. It has day and night vision, up to 20 meters away from the user, which gives the users time to react in most situations.

4. What kind of feedback does it provide?

expand faq

biped generates sound feedback in headphones. But more specifically, biped provides spatial audio feedback in bone conduction headphones.

Bone conduction headphones are simply headphones that are worn around the ears, not in the ears. They leave your ears free for conversations and important sounds. The headphones we deliver with the device are the Shokz Open Run Pro, they are the best performing headphones of this type.

When an obstacle is detected, for example the branch of a tree, at your head-level, on your left, biped will generate a short music note, like a "bip". The music note has a spatial effect, so you will intuitively feel that the sound comes from the left. If the obstacle is at your head level, it will be a high pitch "bip", and if it's on the ground level, it's a low pitch "bip". In a very short sound, you're therefore able to understand that an obstacle is located at your head-level, on the left.

There is one music note per type of object that biped detects. So a car and a bicycle would generate different music notes. When users start with biped, there is only one sound. But as they follow the training program on the app, it unlock sounds and helps reach a better granularity.

5. How does the GPS of biped work?

expand faq

biped uses the GPS system of your smartphone to get GPS navigation instructions. Once you paired the device with your smartphone from the app, you type the destination in the app and just follow the turn-by-turn instructions in the headphones.

6. How do I control biped? Do I need a smartphone?

expand faq

biped is controlled with a smartphone application which allows you start and stop the device, operate updates or change parameters. Pairing the device with a smartphone is for the moment mandatory.

7. How heavy is biped?

expand faq

biped weights around 950 grams (<2 lbs). It was specifically designed to be as light as possible on your shoulders, and easily forget you even wear the device.

Special modes

1. Can biped be used with a cochlear implant?

expand faq

Yes! We ran tests with end-users who successfully managed to navigate with biped, while having a cochlear implant. To do so, we created a high-contrast sound set, with sounds that are easy to differentiate and have a little high-frequencies as possible, as they're harder to hear. To enable it, simply select "Cochlear implant mode" in the settings of the biped app.

2. Can biped be used with a hearing aids?

expand faq

Yes! Modern hearing aids are bluetooth enabled. So instead of playing sounds in the bone-conduction headphones, just pair biped with your hearing aids directly in the Bluetooth menu of the biped app. biped sounds will be directly streamed in your ears then.

3. Can biped be used with a wheelchair?

expand faq

Yes! We tested biped with a couple of patients in a wheelchair, whom for white cane usage is possible, but harder. We noticed very good responses from end-users, and created a specific mode. To enable it, simply select "Wheelchair" in the settings of the biped app.

4. Can biped be used for hemispatial neglects or field cuts?

expand faq

Yes! We very early on included beta-testers who had field cuts or hemispatial neglects. We adapted biped's software to only analyze the part of the image that the person does not process. To enable it, simply select "Hemispatial / Field cut" in the settings of the biped app, and select whether you want to give feedback on the left or on the right of the image.

5. Can biped be used if I have an age-related macular degeneration?

expand faq

Yes!

6. Can biped be used if I have a retinis pigmentosa?

Limitations

1. Can biped be used with kids?

expand faq

The current version of biped has a size that would prevent anyone below 1.40 meters from feeling comfortable using biped.

2. Does it replace a white cane or a guide dog?

expand faq

biped does not replace your white cane or your guide dog. These solutions offer signaling, and protect the very first meter in front of you. If you have had white cane training before, or if you are a guide dog owner, just use biped as a supplement to your daily navigation habits.

3. Isn't it dangerous to have sound feedback when I rely heavily on hearing to navigate?

expand faq

To prevent the sounds that biped generates from blocking the rest of your environment, we include bone-conduction headphones in our package. Bone-conduction headphones are worn around the ears, and do not block surrounding sounds. On top of that, the sounds that we designed with gaming experts are very different from the rest of your environment. They're not invasive, they don't distract you, and there is no risk of confusion with the sounds in your environment. This also allows you to maintain a continuous conversation with a person near you.

4. Does biped work under the rain?

expand faq

biped satisfies IP44 standards, which means light to medium rain. There is a risk that sensors operate with a degraded performance under heavy rain, so we do not advise keeping biped out in such a case. We include a small travel bag for biped that is rainproof if ever you need to pack it quickly under the rain.

5. Does biped work at night?

expand faq

Most of the features of biped also work at night. biped will be able to detect obstacles and holes, and provide GPS navigation. It might in certain cases, and depending on the luminosity, warn you later about cars and other vehicles.

6. Does biped work indoor?

expand faq

The GPS navigation system does not provide reliable instructions indoors. However, all other features perform well and have been tested indoor too.

7. Does biped work for sports too?

expand faq

We plan to support other activities that walking very soon. Future updates will enable visually impaired users to ride a bike for example.
